FIRST Lego League (FLL) Mentoring

Overview

As a mentor for a middle school FIRST Lego League (FLL) team, I have leveraged my extensive experience in robotics to guide and support young students in their journey through robotics competitions. My role involves helping them design, build, and program their robots, while also fostering a collaborative and innovative team environment.

Mentoring Activities

Robot Design and Building

  • Guided the team in brainstorming and conceptualizing robot designs to meet the competition's challenges.
  • Provided hands-on assistance in constructing the robot, ensuring structural integrity and functionality.
  • Taught students how to use various building techniques and materials to enhance their robot's performance.

Programming

  • Introduced the team to programming concepts using MicroPython, transitioning from the simpler Scratch-based programming.
  • Helped the team develop efficient and reliable code to control the robot's movements and actions.
  • Implemented advanced programming techniques to optimize the robot's performance in completing tasks and missions.

Strategy and Problem-Solving

  • Worked with the team to develop strategic approaches to the competition's challenges.
  • Encouraged creative problem-solving and critical thinking to overcome obstacles during the design and programming phases.
  • Conducted regular brainstorming sessions to refine strategies and improve the robot's capabilities.

Achievements

Team Success

  • Under my mentorship, the team won the Engineering Excellence Award at the Davenport HS FIRST Texas Qualifier (2024).
  • Helped the team develop innovative solutions that set them apart in competitions.

Personal Development

  • Fostered a collaborative team environment that encouraged teamwork, communication, and mutual respect.
  • Empowered students to take ownership of their projects, boosting their confidence and leadership skills.
  • Provided guidance and support that helped students develop a deeper understanding of robotics and programming.

Skills and Knowledge Gained

  • Enhanced my mentoring and leadership skills by working closely with a diverse group of students.
  • Improved my ability to explain complex concepts in a way that is accessible and engaging for younger students.
  • Gained satisfaction from seeing students grow and succeed, both individually and as a team.

Conclusion

Mentoring a middle school FLL team has been a rewarding experience that allowed me to share my passion for robotics while helping younger students develop their skills and confidence. By providing guidance and support, I have contributed to their success in competitions and their overall growth in STEM fields.
